Los diques de Holanda (los holandiques)

No hace mucho hablábamos con un amigo sobre la Feria del Agua celebrada el año pasado en Zaragoza. Él había asistido y se mostraba algo decepcionado. Nos decía que la mayoría de los países se habían limitado a poner una barra y una tienda de souvenirs, y que el único país que realmente tenía algo interesante que decir sobre la gestión de los recursos hídricos era Holanda.

En Holanda lo mismo te adelanta un coche como una bici o un barco. Hay para todos los gustos.

Y es que realmente Holanda es un país construído sobre el agua. Por todas partes estás rodeado de canales, molinos para traspasar agua o, directamente, estás pisando terreno por debajo del mar, al que oyes detrás de una pequeña ladera de aspecto frágil. De hecho, una de las cosas que más nos llamó la atención es que para confinar el ganado no usan vallas ni alambradas: les resulta más fácil cavar unos canales rodeando al terreno que se inundan y se vuelven insalvables para los animales. Podéis verlo en la siguiente foto que hemos titulado Holanda, cuando es más fácil cavar un foso que poner una valla.

¿Realmente impiden que el ganado salga o que nosotros entremos? ¿Quién es el ganado aquí? ¿Estamos nosotros aislados de ellos o ellos de nosotros? Este país nos pone reflexivos...

Pero como el tema nos parece muy interesante, os vamos a soltar un tostón de historia. Avisados estáis.

Gran parte de la zona que hoy en día ocupa Holanda ha sido una inmensa e inhóspita marisma, con un gran delta formado por los ríos Rhin, Meuse y Scheldt, que se inundaba frecuentemente. Aún así, se fueron estableciendo ciudades que ganarían en importancia, y llegaría el momento en que, acorralados geográficamente por los grandes imperios germanos y francos, se embarcaron y formaron una de las mayores potencias navales de todos los tiempos. Este poderío económico y científico hizo que ya en el siglo XVII se teorizara sobre la posibilidad de domar al Zuiderzee, una lengua del Mar del Norte que penetraba en el país.

Mientras se esperaba a tener la tecnología adecuada, se iban refinando esas ideas, y finalmente en 1918 comenzaron los conocidos como Trabajos Zuiderzee. Planeaban cerrar al Zudierzee con un gran dique de 32 kilómetros (llamado Afsluitdijk), convirtiéndolo en un dócil lago interior de agua dulce, que se llamaría posteriormente IJsselmeer.

Además, se construyeron varias presas y diques auxiliares que permitieron la aparición de tres nuevas regiones por debajo del nivel del mar, que fueron desecadas mediante molinos y destinadas a la agricultura (conocidas como Pólderes). Aquí podéis ver un buen esquema de los diques y los terrenos ganados al mar.

Así acaban los Pólderes, con una barrerita y del otro lado el mar a mayor altitud. Ver para creer.

El dique Houtribdijk separa el IJsselmeer del Markermeer, los dos grandes lagos de agua dulces robados al Mar del Norte.

Entre 1963 y 1975 se construyó el dique interior Houtribdijk, de 30 km de longitud, entre las ciudades de Enkhuizen y Lelystad, una de las nuevas ciudades fundadas sobre un Pólder. A nosotros nos dejó alucinados cuando vimos al llegar a Enkhiuzen que lo cruza un naviducto (esto es, un puente para barcos). Vas con el coche y por encima te pasa un puente-tubería por el que navegan barquitos... alucinante (vale, realmente eres tú el que sutilmente pasas por debajo, no hace falta que nos recordeis la teoría de los vasos comunicantes).

La otra gran región protagonista de la ingeniería hidráulica holandesa es la provincia de Zelanda, al suroeste el país. Actualmente es uno de los destinos más turísticos de Holanda: la cantidad y calidad de sus playas hace que en verano la zona esté atestada de alemanes, holandeses y belgas.

Sin embargo, originariamente la mayor parte de la región estaba ligeramente por debajo del nivel del mar, por lo que con cada marea la tierra firme aparecía y desaparecía. Aquí tiene su origen gran parte de la ingeniería hidráulica holandesa: los colonos comenzaron construyendo colinas artificales que no se vieran inundadas por las mareas, las fueron uniendo con diques, y ayudándose de molinos para desecar los terrenos ganados estabilizaron el terreno poco a poco, modelando así la nueva morfología de la región.

Tras el cierre del IJsselmeer por el dique Afsluitdijk, los holandeses comenzaron a estudiar la posibilidad de aislar el delta de los ríos Rhin y Meuse. Se iniciaron así los Trabajos Delta, que comenzaron en 1950, y que mediante un ambicioso proyecto de construcción de presas, compuertas diques y canales, pretendía asegurar una zona que llevaba siendo objeto de inundaciones desde la antigüedad.

Sin embargo, cuando se llevaban construidas tan solo un par de presas, acaeció uno de los mayores desastres naturales que azotó a Europa en el siglo XX. La noche del sábado 31 de Enero de 1953, la combinación de una marea alta primaveral y de una potente tormenta provocó una elevación del nivel del mar de casi 6 metros, afectando a Holanda, Inglaterra, Bélgica, Dinamarca y Francia. La provincia holandesa de Zelanda fue una de las zonas más castigadas, donde la marea y las olas sobrepasaron los diques de seguridad inundando masivamente la región.

Tras la tragedia, se redefinió el proyecto Delta, y se comenzó a trabajar intensamente en que algo así no volviera a suceder. Se definió un nuevo Plan Delta, que proponía además bloquear la boca de los estuarios Oosterschelde, Haringvliet y Grevelingen. El mayor de ellos, el dique de Oosterschelde, es una maravilla de la ingeniería que tardó 10 años en construirse. Tiene 66 pilares de más de 50 metros de altura cada uno, con unas compuertas entre ellos que regulan el paso del agua. Cada pilar se encuentra enterrado a 30 metros de profundidad del lecho marino, y tuvieron que idearse nuevas técnicas y materiales que aguantasen la inmensa presión a que se ven sometidos. En caso de emergencia, en menos de una hora las compuertas se cierran herméticamente aislando completamente los estuarios del embravecido Mar del Norte. Id corriendo a Google Earth, vale la pena (51º 36' 25"N; 3º 41' 09"E).

Tanto los Trabajos Zuiderzee como el Plan Delta (finalizado en 1997) han sido decladrados una de las Siete Maravillas del Mundo Moderno por la Sociedad Americana de Ingenieros Civiles. Incluso en varios sitios hemos leído que mencionan al Gran Dique de Oosterschelde como la Octava Maravilla del Mundo.
